The history of texas hold em dates back to early 1900s, though only little is know about the actual invention of the game. Robstown, Texas, is officially said to be the birthplace of the game.
Only in the late 60s the game was introduced to Las Vegas by veterans of gambling, such as Crandell Addington, Doyle Brunson, and Amarillo Slim.
The difference between normal poker played at that time and hold em (at first the games was called simply hold'em) was that you only bet twice in normal draw but you bet 4 times in hold em, that meant you could use more time to strategically outplay other players.

At first holdem was played only in Golden Nugget Casino in Las Vegas. The popularity of Hold Em started gaining real volume in 80's, after it has been played for a decade in Las Vegas and after several WSOP tournaments. At the same time hold em was introduced to European audience.

Doyle Brunson conrtibuted to the success of the game by publishing poker strategy guide in 1978 which definitely revolutionized the way poker was played.
